Waste experts warn of infrastructure 'crisis' due to possible out of date statistics

The Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT) has contacted DEFRA Environment calling for an urgent review of national waste data.

Current data shows that more waste is being collected by local authorities across the country, improving recycling rates. However, ADEPT experts said that the UK government is relying on trends in household waste recorded during the most difficult economic conditions since the war, but evidences show that those trends are a medium term adjustment.

ADEPT highlighted that there is a reduction in recycling rates and that there is danger in assuming an increase because it will make difficult to make UK meet Landfill Directive targets.

This issue stressed the importance of efficient data collection in order to develop and implement efficient recycling policy. The R4R project aims at helping cities and regions to recycle waste efficiently at a local level by providing good practices and an online monitoring tool.
